Effect of Flashing Brake Lights on Drivers\' Brake Reaction Time and Release Gas Pedal Time

چکیده مقاله:
Objective: It is believed that drivers play a crucial role in accidents. Paying attention to brake lights, a driver may find out about danger and react. Rear-end collision accidents refer to the part of the accidents due to driver inattention or slow reaction. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of dynamic flashing brake lights (7 Hz) on drivers' brake reaction time using the driving simulator. Materials & Methods: This experimental study was done on 46 volunteer drivers (10 female and 36 male). After verification of drivers' vision health by an optometrist (10/10 complete and non-color blindness) and completion of demographic questionnaire, participants drove for an hour under day and night conditions on a driving simulator system with standard brake lights and dynamic flashing brake lights. Results indicate that as an age of drivers increased one year, brake reaction time decreased 11.585 ms. Women had slower brake reaction time than men (75.52 ms). Results showed any significant relationship between driving condition and brake reaction time. Computer driving gamers had shorter mean reaction times in comparison with non-game players. The time elapsed since taking driving license has not any significant effect on reaction time. Using flashing brake lights, reduced brake reaction time of driver as 323.42 ms (p< 0.000). Conclusion: Current research using dynamic flashing brake light with a flashing frequency of 7 Hz showed that flashing brake light reduced the brake reaction time significantly. This reduction is equivalent to 10.78 m distances at speeds about, 120 km/h or 7.19 m at 80 km/h.

متن کاملA Combined Pedal for Brake and Accelerator
The present paper deals with design, construction and working of Accelerator and Brake operated by one pedal, which may be a technique for reducing road accidents. The main objective of this innovation is to eliminate the operator’s risk of pressing the wrong pedal at the time of emergency as well as reduction in the driver’s reaction time to switch from accelerator to brakes or vice versa. Thi...
متن کاملA Combined Brake-accelerator Pedal and Its Evaluation
Over the years designers have developed various combined brake-accelerator pedals in an effort to eliminate the operator’s risk of pressing the wrong pedal as well as to reduce his or her reaction time in braking. The goal of this study was to highlight problems that drivers may face when they switch between pedal systems. Eighteen male and female drivers varying in age participated in the stud...
متن کاملBrake Fluid Quality and Brake Performance
The condition of brake fluid is important to automotive safety, reliability and brake system longevity. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. Increasing moisture levels in the brake fluid lower the boiling point, increase viscosity and cause corrosion of system components. Brake fluid with high moisture content can boil when extreme braking is required or a pad sticks. The effect of boiling i...

This paper presents a recognition algorithm combining the vehicle detection and the color difference of RGB color space to recognize the brake-lights state of moving vehicles in order to achieve the intelligent-car’s rear-end collision warning about the vehicle in front of it. Firstly, we train and build AdaBoost cascade classifier by haar features samples and scaling sub-windows are used to de...
متن کاملEvaluation of a sudden brake warning system: effect on the response time of the following driver.
This study used a video-based braking simulation dual task to carry out a preliminary evaluation of the effect of a sudden brake warning system (SBWS) in a leading passenger vehicle on the response time of the following driver. The primary task required the participants (N=25, 16 females, full NZ license holders) to respond to sudden braking manoeuvres of a lead vehicle during day and night dri...
